Prairie-View Ogden North Student Teaching

I had the privilege of teaching 22 kindergartners art! Here, we made clay symbols of ourselves that would eventually go in our books that show who we are!

PVO Elementary: Lesson 1: Storytelling

Book Binding

Storytelling is illustrated in our everyday lives. We often turn to it for comfort when we are going to bed at night, but we also use it for other things such as teaching, art, fun, and forms of communication. Therefore, the goal of this seven-week curriculum was to reveal the art concepts behind storytelling and give students a new view of stories. Since, this curriculum was based on stories, I read a book to them each week that was related to the lesson. We then made books about ourselves with different techniques, mediums, and prompts for who we are along the way. This first lesson was the beginning of putting our books together. We also had the opportunity to design the front and back cover with crayons. (Click the Contact button below to view Lesson Plan 1).

PVO Elementary: Lesson 2: Who are You?

Portraits

Here, on the first page of our books, we made portraits of our faces while trying to incorporate characteristics in them, such as, funny, smart, nice, and quiet. (Click the Contact button below to view Lesson Plan 2).

PVO Elementary: Lesson 3: What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?

PVO Elementary: Lesson 5: Windblown Animals

Collage Favorite Windblown Animals

Here, on the fourth page of our book, we continued the story I read to the students, "Windblown," by using the shapes from the book to make a collage of an animal. We also played with texture by using different types of materials. (Click the Contact button below to view Lesson Plan 5).

PVO Elementary: Lesson 6: Symbols of Self

Clay Symbol

Here, we used magic model clay, sharpies, and cookie cutters in different shapes to make our unique symbols. After the symbols were dry and hard, I glued them to the last page of our books. (Click the Contact button below to view Lesson Plan 6).

PVO Elementary: Lesson 7: Wrap Up

Book Sharing

Here, we individually shared what our stories mean to the whole class. We took time to reflect on what it was like to be an illustrator and an author and if we liked this experience. (Click the Contact button below to view Lesson Plan 7).
